The mosque was designed under the patronage of the 6th Mughal Emperor, Aurangzeb Alamgir. It was finished in 1673 under the guidance of Aurangzeb's nurture sibling Muzaffar Hussain (also known as Fidaie Khan Koka) who was hired governor of Lahore in May 1671 and organised this publish until 1675. He was also Expert of Ordnance to the emperor.
The development of the mosque took about two decades, from May 1671 to Apr 1673. The mosque was designed reverse the Lahore Ft, showing its built in the Mughal Kingdom. Together with the developing of the mosque, a new checkpoint was designed at the fort, known as Alamgiri Gate after the Emperor.
From 1852 forward, piecemeal maintenance were performed under the guidance of the Badshahi Mosque Power. Comprehensive maintenance were performed from 1939 to 1960 at a price of about 4.8 thousand rupees, which introduced the mosque to its unique form and situation. The strategy for the maintenance was ready by the delayed designer Nawab Zen Yar Jang Bahadur.
In 2000, the mending of stone inlay in the primary container was fixed under the guidance of Saleem Anjum Qureshi. On the event of the second Islamic Peak organised at Lahore on Feb 22, 1974, thirty-nine leads of Islamic declares provided their Saturday wishes in the Badshahi Masjid, led by Maulana Abdul Qadir Azad, the 'Khatib' of the mosque.
Recently a little art gallery has also been included to the mosque complicated, which contains artifacts of Muhammad, his relative, and his girl, Hazrat Fatima Zahra.
